New Beginning Ministry was founded in 1997 as a nonprofit corporation. Overseen by a Board of Directors, New Beginning Ministry's goal is to help save lives. Our residential addiction recovery program is a faith based, twelve-step model for recovery.

Our 6.5 acre facility is located at 126 Milanville Road, Beach Lake, PA in beautiful, rural Wayne County, in the Poconos of Pennsylvania. Joel's SHouse and Evergreen Lodge at New Beginning are independently-run recovery retreats in a residential community for alcohol and drug dependence. New Beginning represents a non-medical approach to alcohol and drug addiction. Spirituality is at the heart of this self-governing, spirit-centered community. We believe that survivors of addiction are the real experts on recovery, seasoned practitioners committed to service to each other.

New Beginning Ministry is also a nondenominational, Christian centered retreat facility designed to embrace the individuality of each person and offer a safe environment of prayer, study, work and rest that will bring spiritual and emotional healing. We are a private, nonprofit human service organization that serves all those in need, regardless of race, color, or creed - we do not discriminate.

Our program features a main lodge, guest rooms with private and semi baths, a large country-style dining room, a well appointed meeting/reception room, front and back porches, a full service commercial kitchen and quiet rooms. The second building, Joel's House, is a nine bedroom house with three bathrooms, front and back porches, and a comfortable lounge. Our third building has three rooms with private and semi baths, a laundry facility, and staff quarters.

Reverend Kevin T. Coughlin D.D., NCRCI, NCAMPI, NCIP, PACIP, NCFRC, NCCRC RevKev is a Founder and the Director of New Beginning Ministry, a residential addiction recovery program for adults. Rev. Coughlin has helped hundreds of people to change their lives over the past seventeen years. He is a two-time World Champion and nine-time National Champion powerlifter, a gentle giant who has championed many in his career. Most call him RevKev, they enjoy his lectures on addiction, recovery, and life. RevKev has been very successful with both those addicted and their families. RevKev is considered an expert on addiction and recovery. Many have utilized him as a consultant. Rev. Coughlin is on staff with The Addictions Academy. Coughlin is a member in good standing of the A.A.C.C., The American Association of Christian Counselors. RevKev is also an internationally published poet and writer, mostly on Addiction and Christian subjects. To date, he has had over five hundred poems published. RevKev is also the founder, Ceo and President of Phase II Christian Coaching, LLC, the company operates structured assisted living homes for clients in recovery.

RevKev is also a Nationally Certified Recovery Coach and a Nationally Certified Anger Management Practitioner and a Natioally Certified and PA Certified Interventionist. He received a certificate of completion in Christian Counseling 2.0 and Couple's Recovery 2.0 from Light University.

The Reverend has a very diverse background: he was a police officer, loss prevention supervisor, chef, restaurant owner, casino dealer and supervisor, sober house owner, wrestling coach, football coach, wrestling referee, property manager, investor, painter, student, manager, publisher, poet, writer, lecturer, editor, security professional, and mentor.

RevKev has become a surrogate father to those that need one. The Reverend is also a certified drug tester with the Kcup process. This strong man is not afraid to cry! RevKev loves The Lord Jesus! He knows that to be a leader you have to be a servant first. He believes the people are the church. He believes there is tremendous power in prayer! RevKev believes in the Golden Rule: That Love heals all things, because God is Love. Currently the Reverend is writing training manuals to train and certify recovery coaches on a Christian tract and some secular courses that he will be instructing starting in June, 2014.

Ronald came to New Beginning in March of 2003 as a guest. After attempts to recover in 19 different treatment centers, including half-way houses, therapeutic communities and work therapy programs, he found the solution and recovery here at New Beginning. "The difference was that all the other centers told me my problem not that the solution was lack of power and that I believed a big lie that I could use successfully." Ronald believes in structuring your life in the now. "I help our guests to see the importance of self discipline from making your bed when you wake up,  to doing something good for someone else everyday." Born in Florida and raised in NJ, Ron has made the beautiful countrside of the Poconos his home for more than 10 years. "I live on the property and make myself available to our guests needs everyday. We are one family with one goal, to recover."

A graduate of a Nationally Certified Cali Estes Addiction Academy, Derek Scharite holds a Nationally Certified Recovery Coaching Certificate and is a Nationally Certified Anger Management Practitioner, and Interventionist. Mr. Scharite has a passion for loving those broken and afflicted individuals back to life. Having used the 12 step theology to bring him into recovery today, Derek seeks to edify others through his experience and his example. We are glad to have him with us.

My name is John M Phelps. I live in Melrose NY. My life, quite simply, revolves around my recovery from alcoholism; I have been sober for 34 years. I try as best as possible, but far from perfectly, to bring my recovery experience, strength and hope into all areas of my personal and social life. I love teaching the basic psychology of life---how to move from issues/dysfunction and immaturity… to a mature, balanced and healthy lifestyle in all areas—physical, mental and spiritual. I have written many articles, and a book of my experiences of recovery from alcoholism and ACOA issues. I am a Work in Progress!

Evergreen Lodge

The Evergreen Lodge is our main building. The lodge provides housing for men and women in two separate wings. The lodge also has a full-service kitchen, a well-appointed dining room, meeting rooms, intake office, executive offices, a quiet room, and wrap-around porches for fellowship and conversation.

Our goal is to provide a safe, structured and sober environment for men and women in early recovery. The focus is on change: to work on a solid recovery program and to practice and develop the new skills needed to maintain lasting sobriety.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the success rate at New Beginning? Although it is not possible to stay in touch with all of our alumni, the majority do stay in touch with the ministry. We have found, that because most of our guests stay at New Beginning for more than six weeks, that a good majority stay clean and sober. We estimate the success rate to be between 75 and 80 percent. For those who relapse, we find that many do eventually recover, when they are willing to "put into action" all that they have learned. For those who really want to get and stay sober, and are willing to work the program, we expect a 100 percent recovery rate.

Why do addicts and alcoholics need to stay in a residential facility? Addiction is a disease of the mind and of the body. Addicts and alcoholics need to be in a safe and structured environment where they can learn to function without the use of drugs and alcohol. The mental obsession and the phenomenon of craving can be overwhelming, even for the strongest of will. The best case scenario, is that the addict be in a safe place where they can learn about the problem of addiction, the solution to addiction, and the program of action to overcome addiction.

Why should I choose New Beginning as my program to recover from addiction? New Beginning has over 100 years of recovery on staff! The recovery program is tried, tested, and proven; we know that it works! The ministry has a wonderful, safe and structured environment that is conducive to recovery. You will be a part of a recovery family; you will not be recovering alone. Our recovery program is innovative and informative. The facility has comfortable and homey accommodations. All the guest rooms are air conditioned. The facility has a laundry facility, a weight room, and a built in swimming pool. Does New Beginning take insurance? New Beginning is self pay. You may attempt to get reimbursed by your insurance company. New Beginning is very affordable compared to most other programs.

Is New Beginning a medical facility? No. New Beginning is located in beautiful, rural Wayne County, in the Poconos of Pennsylvania. Do you have to be a Christian to attend New Beginning? No. New Beginning Ministry is a charitable organization that helps all those in need without prejudice. We have helped people from all walks of life and faiths to recover from addiction.

What services does New Beginning Ministry, Inc. provide? New Beginning Ministry has a food bank and pantry to help feed the hungry, housing and shelter for those in need, an addiction recovery program, a clothes bank for those in need of clothing, a prison ministry, the ministry provides addiction recovery information and literature to educational institutions, prisons, and individuals on request. The ministry has a G.E.D. program for those in need of further education. The ministry also has an anger management program and a living skills program.

What age guests can attend New Beginning Ministry, Inc.'s program? Seventeen year olds that are close to their eighteenth birthday and older are welcomed at New Beginning. New Beginning is an adult facility.

Does New Beginning take both men and women? Yes. New Beginning has comfortable accommodations for men and women.

Does New Beginning meet with the family and the addict? Yes. On request, a staff member will meet with the addict in recovery and their family. This happens only by appointment.

How long a wait should I expect before finding placement at New Beginning? You should be able to get immediate placement. If New Beginning does not have an opening, we will refer you to a similar program until we do.

How do I get started? Call New Beginning toll free at 888-660-8709. Ask for admissions, and tell us that you need immediate placement for addiction recovery.

What if I need Detoxification? You can find a local detox or call us and we will recommend one to you. You must not use illicit drugs or alcohol for a period of 72 hours prior to admission to New Beginning.

I live out of state, are there bus stations and airports near New Beginning? Yes. Shortline bus company comes into Honesdale, PA. Major bus lines also run to Scranton, PA. Airlines go to Scranton-Wilkes-Barre airport. You can make arrangements to be picked up at the airport or bus station when you call us. There is an additional charge for this service.
